Freestyle3D Set up Tips – Radio and Helicopter

By Todd Bennett

Setting radio for mechanical set up.

Step 1: Radio
Turn radio on, set all trims to 0.

Step 2: Sub Trims
Set all sub trims to 0.

Step 3: ATV
Set all ATVs (Travel Adjustments) to +/-100%.

Step 4: Pitch Curve
Set a straight line pitch curve (0, 25, 50, 75, 100) in all flight conditions.
You may adjust the normal pitch curve for 6 to 7 deg of negative.

Step 5: Throttle Curve
Set a straight line throttle curve (0, 25, 50, 75, 100) in Normal Mode.
Set a V-curve throttle curve (100, 75, 50, 75, 100) in Idle Up.
These throttle curves assume use of a Futaba gv-1 governor.

Step 6: Servo Direction
Get all servos going the right directions (swash/tail/throttle moving in the correct directions).

Step 7: Mechanical Setup

a. Get all servos centered – 90 degree setup (pitch, aileron, elevator, tail).
b. Work with one servo at a time.
c. Check for binding with servo link off make SURE links move freely.
d. Work from the servo up to the rotor head.
e. Adjust for full movement with no binding.

Step 8: Pitch Curve

a. MCCPM, go to servo screen to center pitch servo at 50%.
b. ECCPM, go to servo screen to center collective, aileron, elevator servo to 50%.
c. Set a straight line pitch curve (using the pitch points make it 0 to 100).
d. Place servo arms on and use the correct pick off point.
e. With the links off, move the servo to the extremes of travel, there should be ~1 mm of clearance at the top and bottom end left over to ensure no binding will occur.
f. Make the SHORT pitch links on the blade grips both the same length.
g. Pitch adjustment is done using the LONG pitch links.
h. At midstick pitch will be very close or at 0°.
i. Final adjustment: this setup will hover at 3/4 stick. Check climb out both inverted and right side up. Adjust the long pitch links so the blades track and the model climbs at the same rate right side up and inverted.
j. Adjust swash settings for eccpm helicopters for desired climb rate.

Step 9: Swashplate Timing, if adjustable

a. Line up main blades straight down the boom.
b. Move radius block until all 4 balls on the swash plate inner ring are lined up with the balls on the outer ring of the swash plate.
c. You can try also advancing the swash timing just a little.

Step 10: Paddle Alignment

a. Make the swash plate level with the radio off.
b. Align the paddles using the fly bar carrier arms as a leveling tool on the Synergy.

Step 11: Cyclic Pitch – Elevator

a. Set main blades 90 deg to helicopter.
b. Adjust collective stick on radio until pitch gauge reads 0 degrees.
c. Move elevator full back.
d. Measure Pitch.
e. Move elevator full forward.
f. Measure Pitch.
g. Values should be the same 6 to 8 deg is good for most pilots.

Step 12: Cyclic Pitch – Aileron

a. Set main blades parallel to the tail boom.
b. Adjust collective stick on radio until pitch gauge reads 0 degrees.
c. Move full right aileron.
d. Measure pitch.
e. Move full left aileron.
f. Measure pitch.
g. Values should be the same 6 to 8 deg is good for most pilots.
h. Tip: Today we are seeing pilots use as much as 14 deg of collective pitch and 10 deg of cyclic. If this much pitch is used you have to really pay attention to pitch management while flying.

Step 13: Fail Safe

a. All control surfaces should be set to hold last position, Throttle – should be set to idle.
b. Be sure and test to make sure it works by leaving the helicopter on and turning the radio to the off position. The throttle should go to idle if signal is lost.

Step 14: Throttle

a. Set ATV’s to 100%.
b. Set Throttle Cut.
c. Adjust ATV to make sure you achieve idle to full throttle.
d. Check limits – insure that no binding at the extremes.

Step 15: Expo good starting point

Step 1: Exponential for NORMAL flight mode

a. -30% on Rudder for Futaba (positive values for JR).
b. -40% on Aileron.
c. -40% on Elevator.
d. Remember – Expo is used to get the feel that you desire around center stick.

Step 2: Exponential for IDLE UP flight mode:

a. -30% on Rudder for Futaba (positive values for JR).
b. -20% on Aileron.
c. -20% on Elevator.
